December Update

Happy Christmas!

It’s the time of year to be jolly, so in between the showers a few hours spent on the allotment at this time of year will not only warm you up, it will reward you with some tasty crops for your Christmas plates.

You can harvest lots of vegetables, including parsnips, leeks and winter cabbages, all of which can be left in the ground until you need them. Harvest brussels sprouts too when they are around one inch in diameter, before they ‘blow open’.

Daylight hours are at their shortest this month, but the shortest day has passed already so it’s only going to get lighter and brighter from now on! Whatever you’re planning to do, enjoy the fruits of your labour and have a great Christmas.

COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT

Wellingborough Eco Group have taken on a plot at Ladywell allotments, to give people the chance to share skills and to grow plants. The site has been cleared and is ready to be developed into a user-friendly space to grow fruit, vegetables and other plants to benefit the community.

Anyone can volunteer at the Community Allotment, you don’t have to know anything about gardening and tools will be provided. We will have working parties at the allotment, socially distancing of course!

We will have learning opportunities with lots of demonstrations on all aspects of growing produce. We will also have a seed bank, to share with other allotment holders and for individuals to plant in their gardens.

The project is as much about community as it is the allotment, so join in and be part of something that will benefit all of us! Find out more and join in on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/communityallotment

STAY SAFE

This month, we are all worried about the coronavirus again, which is challenging for everyone. As the numbers continue to rise, we need to do everything we can to keep everyone safe.

At the allotment, our restrictions will remain the same, but we do expect all members to observe the national rules, as these do apply at the allotment just as they do at any other open space. Please do also continue to observe the restrictions that we have had to implement.
